As part of a series of eight briefs for the World Bank’s Poverty and Equity team, I created the cover illustrations for two publications examining the socioeconomic impact of inflation, currency devaluation and COVID-19 in Egypt. The first explores how rising food and commodity prices affected household welfare, with poorer households particularly exposed to food inflation.

The second examines the pandemic’s lasting impact on employment, highlighting greater instability among poorer households and informal and self-employed workers. The illustrations translate these complex economic themes into clear visual metaphors, using geometric structures, human figures and contrasting levels to represent inequality, vulnerability and economic mobility.

The building blocks represent the interconnected economic factors that shape household welfare, with their different sizes, levels and positions reflecting unequal exposure to rising commodity prices and economic shocks.
